Tristan Murail: The Conquest of Antarctica For Ondes Martenot By Nathalie Forget

Composed by instrument’s inventor, Tristan Murail.

This work was described by Murial as an antidote to the so-called "syrupy" sounds of the ondes martenot. The harmonic melodies and the polyphonic forms allow Murail to create a full “spectra” of noise with which he can paint his musical image. To obtain these sounds, he utilises micro-intervals, mostly quarter-tones. Unlike classical instruments which just sound out of tune when trying to play quarter-notes, the ondes martenot can pitch perfectly, allowing the creation of eerie sounds.
