Maurice Ravel: Gaspard De La Nuit By Bertrand Chamayou
Exploring the length and breadth of the keyboard
This work for piano displays archetypal form of the Impressionist era, using the pentatonic scale, seventh chords and long strides of notes spanning the length of the keyboard. The dynamic culmination of this piece in the middle of the work shows Ravel’s true mastery of piano composition. As a contemporary and friend of Debussy, Ravel’s work develops and is inspired by much of his colleagues work. Can you spot the influence?
