Luciano Berio: O King, with Nora Fischer
Commissioned by the "Aeolian Chamber Players" in 1967
O King is a tribute to the Baptist and civil rights campaigner, Martin Luther King. At the heart of peaceful protests and voicing the struggles for civil rights of black people in the United States, he was assassinated in 1968. This work is an hommage to him and Luciano Berio uses the flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and a mezzo-soprano voice to express extreme sorrow and the glimmer of hope. The song grows and grows until the voice proudly sings out the initials of MLK.
