Henry Purcell: Rejoice In The Lord Alway (The Bell Anthem) By Henry Purcell
Religion and ritual through the verse anthems of Purcell
A notable example of religious music, Rejoice in the Lord always is a verse anthem composed in the relatively brief lifetime of Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Popularly known as the Bell Anthem, the work is a fine example of Baroque music for ATB soloists, SATB choir, strings and organ.
Both instruments and verse conjure vivid religious imagery and Purcell’s evocative talent earned him a permanent place within the classical canon for centuries to come.
