Henry Purcell: My Heart is Inditing Of A Good Matter
Crowning King James II and the majesty of his love for his queen
Written for the coronation of King James II in 1685, My Heart is Inditing — for an eight-person choir, strings and an organ—was intended to score the of the ceremony concerning Mary of Modena, King James II’s queen. Purcell’s royal connection spanned a large portion of his relatively short life, beginning at age ten when the renowned composer was granted admission to the Chapel Royal as a chorister.
In this work, all the pomp and ceremony of a Baroque crowning is evoked through a harmonious to a fro between verse and instrument.
