György Ligeti: Piano Study No.8 "Fém", By Guillaume Vincent
A study in the tradition of Chopin, Liszt and Debussy, composed in 1989.
Taken from the second book of Ligeti's Piano Studies, this eighth study is entitled Fem. In Hungarian, this term means “metal.” György Ligeti probably refers to the material from which the piano strings are made. Built up with open fifth chords, the Piano Study No. 8 produces metallic strikes of the piano. To do this, the written score is made up of asymmetric fragments which grow in intensity. In essence, by destructuring the chords, Ligeti artificially creates the sound of metal.
