The intrigue takes place in Spain during the 9th century. Manoël and Xaïma are about to get married, but an Arab delegation led by Ben-Saïd interrupts the festivities, requesting a tribute of one hundred virgins as it has done so every year. Rarely performed today, the work was nonetheless performed over fifty times during two seasons following its premiere. However, critics were unanimous in declaring that the work was far from its author's best. The critic Gérard Condé has even qualified the work as the composer's "weakest opera".
