Gounod: Faust, Ballet I. "Les Nubiennes" by the Orchestre National de France
The Orchestre National de France conducted by Jesko Sirvend performs the first ballet from Gounod's Faust, "Les Nubiennes", composed in 1856-1859. Excerpt from the Gounod Gala on 16 June 2018 at the Radio France Auditorium (Paris).
The collapse of the Théâtre-Lyrique, where Faust was first performed in 1859, benefited the Paris opera house, keen to aquire a work with a growing success. Gounod was nonetheless committed to write a new ballet. Reluctant to engage in "such essentially profane work" whilst he tried to find through religion a remedy for his creative drought, he asked Saint-Saëns to take care of it...before suddenly finding an inspiration so elegant and perfect that neither he, nor Saint-Saëns, nor even Massenet, ever surpassed.
