Franz Liszt: Years Of Pilgrimage, extract - The Fountains Of The Villa D'Este
A jovial voyage into the wandering waters of the Villa d’Este fonts
Part of the third of three suites of solo piano, Years of Pilgrimage takes its name from the French translation of Goethe’s celebrated work on self-realisation. Over the composition of The Fountains of the Villa d’Este, Liszt inscribed the following excerpt of the Gospel of John as an epigraph: “But the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up into eternal life.” An energetic and joyous rapture, in this work Liszt perfectly captures the beauty and majesty of the fountains of a 16th-century villa in Tivoli, Italy.
