Franz Liszt: Poetic & Religious Harmonies (extract) - Funérailles

The sombre sounds that follow the quashing of a revolution

Bearing witness to the quashing of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and capturing the mood of the nation under martial law in the wake of the crushing defeat of the revolutionaries, Liszt opens the funeral march with heavy and sombre bars, reminiscent of the subdued tolls of a bell. The work’s darkens considerable before finding an upbeat shred of hope in the second half and coming to a close with a somewhat muted and violent end.
