Franz Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No. 1
The Dance in the Village Inn
Taking a fragment of the Faustian legend as inspiration, Liszt whips up a frenzy of drama and enticement in this work which imagines Faust and a village girl ensnared by the fiddle work of Mephistopheles. Drawn into a passionate and inescapable dance, the high fermentation of the piano solo eases out as the characters veer further and further into the forest. Written around 1859-62, Liszt originally intended for the work to be published simultaneously with Night Procession, which precedes it. His request went unfulfilled, but today Mephisto Waltz No. 1 remains one of Liszt’s most celebrated works.
