François Couperin: Leçons de Ténèbres Pour Le Mercredi Saint, No. 2, by the Ensemble Desmarets
A second reflection on the Book of Lamentations
Using the latin text of the Old Testament Book of Lamentations, this music tells the story of Jeremiah, who is inconsolable after witnessing the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. Known as Couperin the Great, François Couperin’s place among the great composers of history was destiny. Coming from a family of fine musicians, François followed in the footsteps of his brother and father as organist of the esteemed Church of Saint-Gervais in Paris. Reflect on this Biblical passage with the second Leçon de Ténèbres.
