Fernand De La Tombelle: Fantasy For Piano And String Quartet By Jean-Frédéric Neuburger And The Strada Quartet

Dedicated to the French pianist and composer Louis Diémer.

Fernand de la Tombelle won the first prize of the Society of the composers of music in 1887 with this piece. Galvanised by this success, he went on composing several alternate versions of his work. First, he adapted it to two pianos and to a small orchestra. Then he scored new versions for piano and strings. This Fantasy is built in three movements: an allegro rich in thematic tension, an adagio and the final allegro molto. Influenced by great romantic composers such as Brahms and Chopin, this body of work has never been recorded and has not been played for more than a century. A beautiful homage.

Portrait of the composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). Found in the Collection of Philharmonie de Paris.
