Federico Mompou: The Fountain And The Bell By Guillaume Coppola
A musical interpretation of an idillic scene
Passing away in 1987, Federico Mompou received a number of illustrious recognitions of his talent in the later years of his life including Spain’s National Award for Music and the French Legion of Honour. In a small square in continental European countryside village, there is a a bell tolling while the fountain gently pours out into the pool below. That is the precise image which Mompou creates in the mind, using chords repeating to mirror the sound of the bell, and descending melodies to show the water running down the fountain.
