Erik Satie: Gymnopédie No. 1 By Guillaume Coppola

A calm chordal composition

Born on the 17th May 1866, Erik Satie was a notable French composer and pianist whose talent went unnoticed at the Conservatoire de Paris where he trained and was described as “worthless”, “insignificant” and “untalented”. You may recognise this work as Satie’s piece is often heard on television adverts, normally depicting scenes of calm and relaxation. One can see why, the opening theme uses two beautiful chords through which a simple melody of descending notes is heard.
