Charles Ives: Sonata No. 5 (excerpt) 2. Decoration Day With Tamsin Waley-Cohen On Violin And Huw Watkins On Piano
A modern work full of surprises
Charles Ives was one of the first American composers who reached international fame, and one of the first to introduce alternative compositional techniques. With impressive piano moments and plenty of double stopping on the violin, this work is a surprisingly easy listen for a mostly-atonal piece. Based on chromatic progressions with occasionally tuneful melodies, this is a great example of modern writing.
