Antonio Caldara: Maddalena Ai Piedi Di Cristo Conducted By Damien Guillon
One of the masterpieces of the Baroque age.
Antonio Caldara’s perfectly captures the angst, sorrow, frustration and, ultimately, deep faith of Mary Magdalene. As a disciple of Jesus Christ, she wishes to repent her earthly sins and live a godly life. However, as all humans are, she discovers herself torn between the seductions of heaven and earth. Thankfully in this 18th Century work, love and mercy triumph. Using religious subjects, Antonio Caldara shows his skill at combining his Italian musical knowledge with the German influences picked up from his contemporaries. Here the Banquet Céleste ensemble breathes new life in this Baroque age masterpiece, with a delicate and subtle interpretation as part of the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu.
