Works By Marc-Antoine Charpentier By The Arts Florissants Conducted By Paul Agnew

A tour de force of renaissance religious composing

Abbaye, Saint Michel en Thiérarche

Marc-Antoine Charpentier was a very versatile composer, having written in many forms and for many instruments. This concert displays the variety he brought to the compositions he created for the church. The concert begins with his Nuptiae Sacrae H 412, followed by Tristis est anima mea H 126 and Transfige dulcissime Jesu H 251. Next, Charpentier’s first Easter celebratory work "Victimae paschali laudes" H 13 is heard. Le Reniement de Saint Pierre H 424 settles the mood after such a loud work alongside Memorare O piissima virgo Maria. His Prelude in D minor H 510 offers a different feel to the prior works, demonstrating Charpentier’s ability to change style. Following this is O crux ave unica spes H 349, Dialogus inter Magdalenam et Jesum H 423 and Salve Regina H 47. The concert closes with another of his Easter celebrations: “Alleluia o filii et filiae”. Experience this display of diverse composition of a Renaissance great.
