Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band earmarks that ephemeral, yet glorious, summer of 1967, which in turn seemed to define the 60s era of peace n’ love. On October 22, 2017, the Concert Hall of the Cité de la Musique hosts a tribute to this work and the music which inspired it, including experimental music and the Beach Boys. When discussing the inspiration to the concert, the conductor, André de Ridder explains: "Rather than play the pieces separately, in a purist spirit, we will try to make this concert a kind of collage, likely to reflect the various music and influences - and perhaps also the chaos that reigned in the minds of these musicians in 1967". The concert opens with variations on the Beach Boys’ hit album Smile, followed by Luciano Berio's first four Folk Songs and his song O King. Next we hear André de Ridder’s Stop and Start and more variations on the Beach Boys alongside an interpretation of Cloud Shapes and Rail Spikes (1987) by Morris Kliphuis.
