A reference to the widespread war syndrome known as "shell shock", from which suffered (and still suffer to this day) countless soldiers during and after the war, Shell Shock, A Requiem of War by the Belgian composer Nicholas Lens, in collaboration with the Australian poet and musician Nick Cave, is a powerful choreographed cantata giving voice through 12 "cantos" to the (often anonymous or unheard) victims of the First World War, such as nurses and orphans, each expressing in their own way the horrors of the war. An unquestionably dark subject, but not one without hope, as explained by the composer himself: "The creation of Shell Shock is tied to the commemorations of the First World War, but it can also be used as a mirror against war in general, like a symphony for peace", a timeless message of peace similar to Benjamin Britten's famous War Requiem.
