György Ligeti ByThe Hermes Quartet And The Ouranos Quintet

A range of performances at the 21st Deauville Easter Festival.

At the rhythm of a succession of musicians, the Elie de Brignac room is filled with a captivating melody.

The second day of the Deauville Easter Festival is dedicated to the life and work of György Ligeti. From his famous Polyphonic Study (1943) to the Piano Study No. 10 (1994), his chamber and piano music are celebrated more than most contemporary composers’. Indeed, many know his name from the soundtrack to the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Over the course of the evening, various combinations of performers interpret his work. Pianists Jonas Vitaud and Guillaume Vincent, violinist David Petrlik, horn player Nicolas Ramirez, the Hermes Quartet and Quintette Ouranos perform nine works by György Ligeti. We hear the Polyphonic Study for Four-Handed Piano; Four-Handed sonata; String Quartet No. 1; Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano; Piano Studies No. 8, No. 2, No. 10 and Piano Study No. 6, which features a wind quartet. Ambitious and original, this musical program covers two of the three productive periods of the holocaust-surviving composer’s career.
